Jamia Millia Islamia in collaboration with South Asian Cultural Studies (SACS) Online Journal and Open House Press, U.K. is going to organize a two-day International Workshop on “Imaging South Asian Cultures in Non-English: Re-Constructing Popular Textual and Visual Representations” on January 9 & 10, 2014.
With the wealth of translated documentation on more than 20 major languages on South Asia, along with the host of other European and non-European representations, this workshop would like to bring a host of academics to provide an alternative understanding. With the fast changing cultural dynamics of ‘home and abroad, such studies providing contrasting and negotiating representations in both textual and visual forms should be of much interest to all.
The programme shall be formally inaugurated by Prof. S.M. Sajid, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia on January 9, 2014 at 10 AM. He will also address the guests and audience on this occasion.
Dr. Tasleem Shakur, FRSA, Editor of SACS and Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, Edge Hill University, UK will deliver theKeynote Address. He will speak on “Imaging South Asian Culture in non-English” and deliver an introduction to the thematic structure of the workshop.
The workshop is spread over four broad themes where papers will be presented by academicians, research scholars on the topics relevant to the theme of the Workshop.
The broad areas to be covered in the workshop are as follows:
Day 1, January 9, 2014
11.30 AM – 01.00 PM … Modernity, Fiction and the Philosophy
02.00 PM – 04.00 PM … Socio-Religious Representations of South Asia
The Plenary Session for Day 1, will be held from 3.30-04.00 PM
Day 2, January 10, 2014
11.30 AM – 01.25 PM … Construction of Culture, Identity, Sense of Place
02.10 PM – 04.00 PM … Filmic, Visual & Textual Representations
The Plenary Session for Day 2, will be held from 04.00-04.30 PM. At the end, there will be a final informal interactive time for the participants during tea break.
The workshop is expected to be attended by a large number of academicians, bureaucrats, research scholars, renowned experts from varied disciplines from India and abroad particularly from U.K.
The programme is scheduled to be held in Tagore Hall, Dayar-I Mir Taqi Mir (Administrative Block), Jamia Millia Islamia.
