Integrate technology with research to minimize Earth disasters, said eminent Earth Scientist and Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Prof. Talat Ahmad in a program held on June 2 in New Delhi.

Inaugurating the Training Program on Geospatial Technologies, Prof. Ahmad underlined the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) to understand various issues linked to climate change and disaster management.

Prof. Ahmad exhorted students and researchers to understand the challenges in respect of critical issues like climate change and disaster management and felt that they should become partners in the scientific progress by seizing opportunities thrown open by the Government of India.

Stressing the importance of the study of the Himalayan Glacier in respect of its health and dynamics and how it is getting impacted by the climate change, Prof. Ahmad observed that it was imperative to exploit technological resources at our disposal and integrate them with research pursuits in the domain of earth science to minimize disasters that threaten human kind.

The training program was organized by the Department of Geography, JMI under the aegis of National Resource Data Management System (NRDMS), DST.

Dr. Bhoop Singh, Advisor & Head, NRDMS, who was the Guest of Honor for the inaugural event, gave a detailed presentation on the evolution of the training program on Geospatial Technology.
Around 25 participants from various institutions and universities in India are attending this training program which is to be addressed by the experts from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, Teri University, Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India, Punjab University and various other institutions.

Prof. Shahnaz Parveen, HoD, Department of Geography welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honor and the participants, while Prof. Masood Ahsan Siddiqui, Coordinator, spelt out the arrangement of the 3- week interaction with the participants.

Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmad, Dean, F/o Natural Sciences at JMI, thanked VC for his encouragement and expressed his keenness to receive his unstinted mentoring for the growth of the faculty.
