National Science Day celebrated at Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi: All the departments and centres associated with Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) today celebrated National Science Day in the university. A number of programmes were organized on this occasion at different departments and centres situated throughout the campus.

A Public Lecture on “Quantum Information Today” by Prof. V. Ravishankar, Department of Physics, IIT Delhi was organized at the Engineering Faculty Auditorium of the university.

Prof. Ravishankar is a theoretical physicist who obtained his PhD from the  University of Mysore, had a short stint in TIFR as a visiting fellow before joining IIT Kanpur as a faculty member. His has worked in the areas of Quantum chromodynamics, quark gluon, plasma, quantum hall effects, Laser plasma interaction and quantum information. 

A Symposium on ‘Life Style Disorders’ was organized at the Engineering Auditorium, JMI. Dr. Sameer Srivastava, HoD, Non-Invasive Cardiology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Dr.Gagan Kapoor, HoD, Health Care, Noida, Prof. H.N. Malik, Department of Physiology, AIIMS, Dr. Rizwan Khan, Jamia Hamdard and Prof. Senthil Kumar, HoD, Physiotherapy, Noida International University delivered important lectures on various health issues related to Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart Diseases, Low Back Pain, Lifestyle Problems, Sleep Disorders and Role of Physical Activity, etc.

Planetarium shows were organized in the Auditorium of Jamia School where school and university students actively participated.

Screening of the film titled ‘The Quantum Indians’ written and directed by Raja Choudhury was organized at the Seminar Room of the Centre for Theoretical Physics, JMI. This film had won National Award for Best Educational Film in 61st National Film Award in 2013. This film talks about Satyendra Nath Bose, Chandrashekar, Venkat Raman and Meghnad Saha, the legendary trio of Indian Science.

Open House for faculties and students were carried out at the Centre for Nanosciences, Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Ramanujan Block and Department of Geography where they were exposed to various cutting-edge technologies and high-end equipments to give a glimpse of futuristic science.

The celebration concluded with a Quiz Competition based on various aspects of Science. Students enrolled in undergraduate courses participated in this competition.
