Grand National Conference on Advanced Functional Materials at Jamia

New Delhi: The Department of Chemistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a two-day National Conference on Advanced Functional Materials (NCAFM-2019) under the aegis of MHRD-SPARC scheme. The aim of the conference was to highlight the significance of Advanced Materials in modern times and to discuss the various applications of these materials particularly in energy storage and generation.

The conference gathered a  galaxy of eminent scientists. It was presided over by Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, JMI, Prof. D. D. Sarma, IISc Bangalore (Chief Guest), Prof. Ashok K. Ganguli, IIT Delhi (Guest of Honor).

During his inaugural address distinguished scientist Prof. D. D. Sarma emphasized upon the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach towards the design and development of Advanced Functional Materials.

The scientific remarks were given by Prof. A. K.Ganguli. He said that the theme of the conference is a high priority research area. The concept of the conference was well-timed, he added.

JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar appreciated the initiative taken by the Chairman (NCAFM -2019), Prof. Amir Azam to invite renowned dignitaries as speakers in this conference. She motivated the department to conduct an International Conference as part of the centenary celebrations of the university.

The Conference Abstract Booklet and upcoming International Conference brochure ICAFM were unveiled during the inaugural session.

The Convener of the conference Dr. Tokeer Ahmad presented the Conference Report and informed the participants that selected manuscripts would be published in Materials Today Proceedings, Elsevier Journal. He also mentioned that the conference received messages and well wishes from Hon’ble Vice-President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, UGC-Chairman Prof. D.P. Singh, DST-Secretary Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, DG-CSIR Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, Director IIT Delhi Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao and AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tariq Mansoor which were included in the abstract booklet.

The formal vote of thank was presented by the Convener, Dr. Tokeer Ahmad.

The conference included 2 plenary lectures given by Prof. D. D. Sarma (IISc, Bengaluru) and Prof. K. Vijayamohanan Pillai (IISER, Tirupathi) and 5 technical sessions comprising  22 invited talks were held. The talks were delivered by Prof. Balaji Jagirdar (IISc), Prof. Aninda Bhattacharyya (IISc), Prof. Bodh Raj Mehta (IITD), Prof. Ramanan (IITD), Prof. Ganguli (IITD), Prof. Amitava Patra (IACS), Prof. Ravi Shankar (IITD), Prof. Anil Kumar (IITR), Prof. Nagarajan (DU), Prof. Absar Ahmad (AMU), Prof. Kailasam (INST), Prof. Farid Khan (Sagar), Prof. Sayan Bhattacharya (IISER K), Prof Sapra (IITD), Prof Ingole (IITD) and Prof. Deka (DU).

The conference attracted about 300 participants and 130 poster presentations from all over the country.

The event was supported by the MHRD-SPARC scheme of the Govt of India and partially funded by SERB-DST,  CSIR, INSA, Perkin Elmer, Helion, Ekta, Venture, City, Anton Paar, Piquant and ADL.
