At least seven activists of left leaning parties, including three female activists, were detained from the National Press Club area in the capital on Saturday afternoon while they were trying to hold a protest rally against the visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. Among the detained are Samajtantrik Chhatra Front city unit general Shariful Islam, Dhaka University unit activist Tapati Barman Toma, Dipa Mollik, Badrunnesa College unit activist Sayem, Jatiya Mukti Council leader Ahmed Muhiuddin, Naya Ganatantrik Morcha activists Jafar Ahmed and Jakir Suman.

Meanwhile, Ganatantrik Biplabi Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu was allegedly confined to her house at Kalabagan and her cell phone was seized, said the party leaders.

When contacted, Kalabagan police officer-in-charge Md Iqbal said he knew nothing regarding the matter.

‘Left parties talk too much,’ the OC added.

Bangladesh Samajtantrik Party, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Jatiya Mukti Council and Naya Ganatantrik Morcha and some other left leaning held a rally in front National Press Club in protest against Narendra Modi’s visit.

The parties demanded solutions to issues related to Teesta water sharing deal, border killing, transit, trade deficit. Shahidul Islam Sabuj, a central committee leader of Ganatantrik Biplabi Party, alleged that all these issues were left out of the agenda.

As the left leaning party leaders and activist were moving towards the press club, police intercepted them and arrested some of the activists, said Shahidul.

DMP Ramna zone assistant commissioner Shibly Noman said the party might have caused chaos and disorder which could pose security threat to the visiting Indian prime minister, so they detained the people.

The activists were detained by Shahbagh police, but kept at Ramna police station for security reasons, said Ramna police station subinspector Saiful Islam.

Earlier, three activists of Jatiya Mukti Council, a leftist organisation, were arrested on Wednesday while they were distributing leaflets opposing Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s visit. (Courtesy: http://newagebd.net/)
