New Delhi : Prostate cancer is emerging as the second most deadly disease among men in Delhi and other metropolitan cities, said world renowned Urologist Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar, HoD, Urology and Renal Transplant, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
It was a myth that Prostate cancer is basically a disease more common in western world, he said adding that recent studies revealed that cases of prostate cancer is increasing very fast in India particularly in metro cities.
“It is emerging as the second most deadly disease among men in Delhi. Cases may be more in rural areas but due to non availability of accurate data it cannot be said conclusively”, he said delivering a public lecture organised today PRO-Media Coordinator’s Office in collaboration with Centre for Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Science, Faculty of Dentistry & Dr. M.A. Ansari Health Centre, JMI, on the occasion of International Prostate Cancer awareness month.
Though the cases are increasing due to sedentary life style and unhealthy eating habits, 90 percent of the cases can be cured through medicines and surgery is not required, he said.
He stressed that there are some common symptoms of benign and prostate cancers in initial stages which should not be ignored. It is curable if diagnosed timely. There are simple test like ‘PSA” which should be conducted every year once a person crosses the age of 50.
He advised a disciplined life style, healthy food habits, avoiding packaged food, quitting smoking and alcohol to prevent the disease. Apart from prostate cancer, he also discussed about common urological disorders among females and males.
Mr. A.P Siddiqui, IPS, Registrar, JMI thanked Prof. (Dr.) Anup for delivering the enlightening lecture and expressed the hope that this would create awareness about urological problems and steps to be taken to prevent them.
