Jamia organises talk on “Gandhi-his life, work and contribution to society”

New Delhi: “Gandhi-his life, work and contribution to society” was talked about as part of 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Dr M.A. Ansari Auditorium of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI).

Ms. H.E. Aashna Kanhai, the ambassador of the Republic of Suriname was the chief guest at the function. In her keynote address, she traced the linkages between India and Suriname and illustrated through personal and political anecdotes that how Gandhi was crucial to this relationship.

The 90 year old Gandhian and Social Worker Shri Salem Nanjudaiah Subbarao narrated his own experiences related to Gandhiji and underlined the need to remember him not just for tokenism but through concrete deeds by following his teachings.

His spirited rendering of the earth anthem ‘Jai Jagat’ moved the audience to sing along and the hall reverberated with the melodious chorus.

Shri Ram Chandra  Rahi, President, Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and Shri Kumar Prashant, Chairman, Gandhi Peace Foundation dwelt upon the relevance of Gandhi in the contemporary world.

The speakers from JMI were Dr. Mukul Kesavan, Dr. Bulbul Dhar James and Dr. Krishna Swamy Dara carried forward the discourse through their interpretations of  Gandhi and his thoughts. 

The event which was organised by the office of the DSW was graced by important functionaries of the university including the Registrar Mr. A.P. Siddiqui and the faculty members.
