Washington, DC: The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), a Washington, DC-based advocacy group, today announced the launch of the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Grant Program.

The program will support early and mid-career journalists to pursue reporting projects on threats to democracy, key challenges confronting the religious minorities and Dalits in India, and the Indian diaspora in the United States. Topics chosen by the journalists must be timely and of clear interest and importance to Indian or the Indian diaspora audiences.

“This grant will help journalists do the urgent and critical work of exposing threats to democracy and digging deeper into the challenges to human rights and religious freedom in India,” said Syed Ali, President of IAMC.

Both freelance and full-time reporters are eligible for this grant, and their reports can be published in reputable print, online, or broadcast media with a wide circulation. The stories that the grant supports must be in English.

Journalists can apply for grants of up to $1500 (120,000 INR) to cover their reporting expenses. The selection committee will decide the final grant amount for each proposal.

Applicants must submit a letter of intent for publication written on letterhead by an editor or the news outlet agreeing to publish or broadcast the story.

Proposals from journalists from minority and marginalised communities are strongly encouraged.

Journalists who meet the criteria may submit their proposals online by Saturday, September 10, 2022. Grant decisions will be made within three to four weeks of applications being submitted.
