New Delhi: famous civil rights activist Binayak Sen has asked the government to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the sedition law.

A pediatrician and public health specialist, Sen was granted bail on April 15 by the Supreme Court after being sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in Chhattisgarh on charges of sedition and his alleged links with Maoists.

“A large number of human rights organizations have joined hands to oppose the sedition law and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA),” Sen said at a felicitation function at Kalyani in West Bengal.

He said that the human rights groups would collect signatures of 10 million people against the sedition law and that it would be sent to Parliament.

Sen had earlier accused the government of misusing the sedition laws to silence voices of dissent. He is the national vice-president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties.

Sen recently received the Gwangju prize for human rights, South Korea’s most prestigious award for those working on peace, democracy and justice in Asia.
