The entire Indian cricket team, fans across the nation and the world were in torrent of joy, forgetting class and all division, as Dhoni and company lifted the world cup after 28 years.
The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who had to wait for six world cups in a career of twenty one years was very emotional and called it the “proudest moment” of his life.
An emotional Sachin said, “Couldn’t have asked for more. This is ultimate. It is the proudest moment of my life.” He further added, “I thank the team for putting up a fabulous performance and playing consistent cricket. We have stuck together through ups and down.”
Zaheer Khan, who was the leading wicket taker with 21 dismissals to his credit (along with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi) dedicated the cup to the legend. He said, “Couldn’t have asked for more. The entire team did it for Sachin Tendulkar.”
Yuvraj Singh, who was adjudged the Man of the Tournament dedicated hIs performance and the cup to his “Guruji”, the “the special person” he had earlier hinted at.
Gautam Gmabhir, who fell three short of his century, was still not able to accept: “We wanted to win it for Sachin Tendulkar. This World Cup is for him. It’s yet to sink in and I don’t know when it will.”
Virat Kohli, who too played an important partnership with Gambhir when both Sehwag and Sachin got out early was overjoyed: “It’s a huge moment for me. Its my first World Cup and I couldn’t have asked for more. I would dedicate this victory to the nation and Sachin Tendulkar. He has carried the burden of the entire nation for 21 years. It was our time to carry him on our shoulders after the match.”
However, not everyone was as happy. Muttiah Muralitharan, who was playing his last world cup for Sri Lanka said, “”It was a little bit disappointing because my main aim was to win the World Cup…But unfortunately we couldn’t do that because India was a better side on the day.”
