The Department of History and Culture, Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a Lecture on “Myth and Reality of the Khap Panchayats: An Historical Analysis of the Panchayat and Khap Panchayat” by Dr. Surajbhan Bhardwaj.

The purpose of organizing the Lecture is to understand the issue of “Panchayat” and “Khap Panchayat” which has been at the centre stage of debate in civil society and the media. Unfortunately, this matter has not stayed restricted to the sphere of debate alone but increasingly every other day we hear of brutal murders in the name of honour killings. The talk will go on to touch upon the contours of this debate.

Dr. Surajbhan Bhardwaj is Associate Professor in the Department of History, Motilal Nehru College, University of Delhi. He has written extensively on social, political and cultural history of the Mewat region. His doctoral thesis was on the theme of agrarian structure and forms of agrarian protest in Mewat during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  Drawing upon the archival sources preserved at the Rajasthan State Archives, Bikaner, Dr. Bhardwaj’s research has made a significant contribution to the understanding of the history of late medieval and early modern peasant communities of northern India.

The programme is scheduled to be held on September 26, 2013 at 12.15 PM in the Seminar Room of Department of History and Culture, Jamia Millia Islamia.
