SC has declared EVM’s as unreliable wayback -Justice (retd ) B G Kolse Patil

Defeated candidates  have started  holding mammoth  protest marches against EVMs in Pune.

PIMPRI: The issue of large scale tampering of EVM’s during the recently concluded Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections has led to outbreak of largescale protests by all major political parties in the city.Justice Kolse Patil who addressed a gathering of defeated candidates in Pimpri on Monday  said, “ In October 2013 the Supreme Court had made it  amply clear that EVM machines are unreliable, so at the time of voting the printout of the voting should be taken and the same should be collected in a box. The Supreme Court also asked for changes in the EVMs, but the Election Commission has not taken any steps towards this. When contempt of court petition was filed, the Court has asked petitioner to approach the Election Commission.”

“The Election Commission needs funds for modification of EVM machines, but the government has not provided the funds. It is essential that all the  defeated candidates must approach the High Court regarding discrepancies in the election. To raise our point, defeated candidates from all parties must take out a big protest march along with submission of  memorandum to the Returning Officer, the election officer at their concerned civic body and State Election Commissioner’s office,” he added.

Later a decision was taken to conduct a massive protest march against the BJP-led government. The protestors also unanimously decided to approach the court against the alleged misuse of power. The candidates from all parties demanded that the election should be re-conducted through ballot paper.    Amaongst the prominent members present comprised of former Mayor Shakuntala Darade, PCMC NCP city unit chief Sanjog Waghere, Congress city unit chief Sachin Sathe, Leader of the House Mangala Kadam, Yogesh Behl, Nana Kate, Shiv Sena leader Bhagwan Walhekar, NCP’s Prashant Shitole, Vilas Nandgude, Maruti Bhapkar, Datta Waghere and others. Earlier, firebrand ex MNS Corporator Rupali Patil had staged a strong protest against her defeat alleging that the EVM’s had been tampered to ensure the win of BJP candidates.

Outgoing Pune Mayor Prashant Jagtap too would be approaching the Supreme Court citing large scale tampering of EVM’s by the BJP led Government in Maharashtra. Defeated NCP corporator and NCP Heavyweight from Shivajinagar Balasaheb Bodke held a massive protest march  against EVM tampering on JM road on Tuesday. Bodke said that democracy has been stolen and the citizens will have to come onto the streets to demand their right to paper ballot failing which the remaining structure of democracy will fade into darkness of fascism.
