Hindus across India are celebrating Dussehra (Tenth day of Navratri or Durgotsav) festival today. From this day onwards, a new cash benefit scheme for poor girls from Muslim community getting married comes into effect in Telangana.

The “Shadi Mubarak” scheme, introduced by the Telangana government, assures Rs. 51,000 cash for those poor girls who are getting married. Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has taken a decision to this effect and a GO has been issued for it.

Poor Muslim brides will get financial support of Rs 51,000 at the time of their wedding. The scheme is likely to be implemented by State Wakf Board, as the agency conducted mass marriages of poor Muslim girls in the past.

The Telangana government also believed to have assured Dalit and tribal girls of similar financial assistance under “Kalyani Lakshmi” scheme which may also be implemented from Dussehra festival.

Though some critics of KCR’s government see the scheme is a tactics of the newly formed state government to appease Muslims in lieu of their support to the party in the recent Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls. At the same time, many appreciated KCR for these schemes for poor girls of Muslims and Dalit & tribal communities.
