SUBHASH CHANDRA AGRAWAL
It refers to demand made by 34 eminent citizens made to Prime Minister for probing medical lapses that allegedly resulted in death of former Chief Justice of India JS Verma. Earlier wife of the former CJI had also written a similar letter to Prime Minister. Such letters from eminent citizens from all walks of life on death of a devoted an honest jurist who spent his post-retirement life in a rented house is indeed a matter of serious concern. While those having occupied high posts in legislative system get all types of government-provided facility including of government-bungalows, secretariats and health-care, there are no such post-retirement facilities for even retired Chief Justice of the nation.
It is also a matter of concern that a highly renowned private hospital provided a 24-hours service of big team of doctors, hi-fi ambulances and all other gimmickries of medical care including post-fast hospitalization for a highly publicized event of mass-movement. But reports indicate that no concession in medical-bill was given for the highly respected legal luminary known for his honesty having held highest post in Indian judiciary. If it is so, Union government should reimburse medical-charges paid for hospitalization of Justice JS Verma who supersonically completed enquiry in infamous 16/12 Delhi gang-rape in record time without seeking any extension just before his death. It is significant that even after spending so much, the said medical-care have raised eyebrows of family-members and eminent citizens now demanding probe in medical-lapses allegedly causing death of former Chief Justice of India.
